What is the Gastric Balloon Procedure?

Gastric Balloon is a popular non-surgical procedure for those uncomfortable with surgery. Since the weight loss balloon is inserted through your throat and into your stomach there is no need for any incisions, stitches or scars. Many patients go home to start their weight loss journey on the same day of having the balloon inserted.

The operation involves a balloon to be placed into the stomach for up to six months. The gastric balloon is inserted orally through your esophagus and placed directly into your stomach. A syringe is then used to fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution until it is about the size of a grapefruit. The procedure last 20-40 minutes while you are mildly sedated. During the six months of which the balloon is in your stomach, your food intake will become smaller and you will become accustomed to the smaller meals all without being starved. This is due to the balloon taking up space in your stomach leaving less room for larger portions. The shape and volume of the stomach balloon takes up enough space in your stomach to help you adapt to healthier portion sizes. The balloon used in the operation is the ORBERA® which is a FDA approved, durable gastric balloon made out of soft silicone. The technology and design of the balloon enables patients to lose a sizable amount of weight.

The gastric balloon will be removed six months after the date of the initial procedure. The balloon is not to be inserted longer than this amount of time. Once the gastric balloon has been removed it is crucial to continue to work closely with your doctors in order to find a plan that will best benefit you in keeping the weight off.
